The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with the “doomer-accelarationist” debate, often overshadows a critical component: creativity. While AI excels in data processing and pattern recognition, it still needs an intermediary, to add the “human touch” in the form aesthetic judgements to truly amplify it’s capabilities.

Intrinsic limitations of AI in understanding human creativity
By construction, the ability for AI to “think out of the box” is inherently constrained by virtue of great strength in pattern recognition!
Very much like neophytes on a musical instrument, it is technically possible to “live in the code” and get the rules (at least for tonal music, anyway) right, it takes a lifetime to educate the ear to “appear” innately attuned to the “money notes” that infuse liveliness and musical energy to a piece.
Despite all the GPU computes and the densest of neural networks, the ability for AI to replicate, with authenticity, the subtle variations in timing, dynamics, and expression that elicit the “STANK FACE”.
To the uninitiated, I define “Stank Face” in the image below.

Humans and Machines learn things differently… Period
Ultimately, AI’s ‘education’ through programming and large datasets lacks the human essence of learning.
Human learning is enriched by emotional, cultural, and experiential factors.
Returning to the “stank face” inducing “money notes”, the “weights” of emotional resonance remains elusive to the latest open-sourced Chat GPT competitor you’re trying to fire up on consumer grade hardware, unlike the effortless perception by human artists and audiences.

While AI continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, bridging the gap between its analytical prowess and the innate, unquantifiable elements of human creativity remains a formidable challenge. Let us consider celebrating what makes us human; our intuitive grasp of “the unteachable”, which continues to be an irreplaceable catalyst for innovation and expression.
